Experience the traditional Moutya dance at STORY Seychelles every Wednesday evening at Beau Vallon Beach. This UNESCO-recognized Seychelles dance tradition features hypnotic drumbeats and powerful movements that tell stories of resilience and cultural heritage dating back to the 18th century.
A Dance Born from Resilience
Moutya originated in the 18th century, brought to Seychelles by enslaved Africans. It became a powerful form of emotional expression, cultural resistance, storytelling, performed under the stars, around the fire, and in defiance of hardship.
How the Drums Are Made
Moutya drums are traditionally made from hollowed-out tree trunks and goatskin, heated over fire to tune the sound. The drumbeat is central—raw, hypnotic, and deeply emotional.
UNESCO Recognition
In December 2021, Moutya was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, becoming the first Seychellois tradition to receive this global honor.
Don’t just watch, feel the rhythm! You’re welcome to join in and move to the beat of Seychelles’ living heritage.
